Synopsis for Gemotroplis – The Stolen Heart
Lustre (17) is an autistic orphan miner in an oppressed medieval Ruby Nation, with no family memory. He and his only friend Rusty unearth a powerful magical jewel.
Using the jewel, Rusty unwittingly casts a foreign Topaz spell, is branded a terrorist and is turned to stone by guards. The stolen heart represents both the jewel and the profound loss of Rusty. The Ruby Nation is presented as a comical parallel to WWII-era Germany, ruled by the grandiose narcissist Emperor Maroon.
Lustre grows personally after encountering Winston Fletcher (46), an intellectual potion brewer who rescues Lustre from a blizzard. Winston is also the supplier of potions to the Ruby Army. Winston betrays Lustre and steals the jewel after identifying it as the Heart of the goddess Gemotronia.

Lustre then regains the jewel with help from Jackie Fletcher (35), a persecuted foreign hunter with a vendetta against Emperor Maroon. Jackie has a complex relationship with Lustre, serving as a mentor, being Winston’s brother, and becoming the target of Lustre’s inappropriate actions.
Lustre’s quest for the jewel is ultimately aimed at rescuing Rusty. Meanwhile, Emperor Maroon desires the jewel to wage war, evade reparations from the First War, and avenge his father’s death, Emperor Cranium. The climax occurs when Maroon deceives Lustre into trading the jewel for Rusty, just a heavy statue. The story concludes with Maroon preparing for war.
The Fletchers teach Lustre about Gemotroplis history, magic, and proper behaviour, helping him develop empathy after impulsive actions. In the finale, Lustre reverts and casts a forbidden spell, Paralapse, which ages Winston into a fragile old man as they approach Ruby Army Preparatory as conscripts.
Emperor Cranium appears as an evil, narcissistic spirit, whispering in the wind and offering glimpses of the past to manipulate Lustre. Throughout the story, Lustre makes poor decisions and reacts inappropriately, with the root cause deliberately obscured to hint at Cranium’s influence playing with Lustre’s autism.
Lustre faces the reality of dealing with narcissists, especially once deceived, learning Rusty cannot be saved. Meanwhile, Maroon unwittingly creates an enemy in Winston, jeopardising potion supplies for his war.
